Nuffield Street Redevelopment

Client: Westfield NZ Ltd
Cost: Newmarket, Auckland
Completed: August 2006

The rejuvenation of this fringe area of Newmarket - in conjunction with Westfield Design - involved the upgrading of two very different buildings and a tired through road into a streetscape that is now vibrant and enriched day and night. The mixed use, street-based retail precinct now provides a level of sophistication reminiscent of Chapel Street in Melbourne and the project received a commendation at the Property Council Awards in 2007.

The impressive Mercury Energy building, with its heritage listed curved facades, was converted into high-end office space with its ground floor housing a haute couture tenancy line up to rival the best in the country. The building’s stately staircases were revived and its lobby spaces enhanced to suit its commercial tenants, Watercare and Sony, and connections were made to a dedicated new parking building behind it.

The previously rundown semi-industrial Nuffield building was seismically strengthened and extensively rebuilt behind its original façade - catering for restaurant tenancies and more high-end fashion retailers.

Nuffield Street itself received a significantly made over: new glass canopies were designed to accommodate the existing street trees and now links the two sides of the street into a single precinct. Modern street/ building lighting and complimentary signage helps create an elegant and refined ambiance, which the client could in future, extend the full length of the road.
